Stay In The Home You Love
A Northern Nevada Guide to Confident, Independent Living
Welcome — A Message from John Austin, Founder
Hello Northern Nevada friends and neighbors,
I’m John Austin, and I founded Aging In Place NV with one simple belief:
Your home should remain your sanctuary -not a source of stress or uncertainty.
You’ve built memories inside your home. You know every corner, every creak in the floor, every view of the Sierra sunrise. At a certain stage in life, staying in that familiar, meaningful place shouldn’t depend on luck, crisis, or sheer determination.
It should depend on smart planning, supportive infrastructure, and the knowledge that your environment adapts to you -not the other way around.
At Aging In Place NV, we call this philosophy:
“Stay In The Home You Love.”
The Small Shifts That Change Everything
Independence rarely disappears all at once. In fact, research and aging‑trend data show that most changes begin subtly -not dramatically.
Sometimes it’s a stiff knee on a cold Reno morning.
Sometimes it’s feeling mentally overloaded by coordinating contractors, home repairs, or seasonal maintenance.
Sometimes it’s simply that what used to be easy… now feels like a chore.
We call this the 20% Rule:
If your physical or mental bandwidth shifted by just 20% tomorrow, would your home still support you?
A 20% shift isn’t a crisis. It’s a signal.
In a non‑optimized home, that 20% becomes a burden.
In a Supportive Home, that same shift is absorbed seamlessly by good design, simpler systems, and smart planning.
When Should You Start Planning?
The strongest data from aging‑in‑place experts is clear:
Start in your 50s and 60s — while you have full independence and full choice.
This is what we call the Design Phase:
- You can upgrade lighting, flooring, safety features, and home systems stylishly -without urgency.
- You can choose technology as a helpful partner rather than a confusing afterthought.
- You remain in full control.
By your 70s, you move into the Optimization Phase:
- You ensure your support network (vendors, tech, safety, maintenance) is dialed in and dependable.
- You minimize unexpected disruptions and increase your home’s resilience.
Waiting until a medical incident or sudden limitation triggers the Reactive Phase means:
- Decisions are rushed
- Costs are higher
- Control shifts from you to the situation
Planning early isn’t about expecting decline.
It’s about protecting your autonomy.
